“World Peace”

Artist: Tricia Spencer
Medium: Colored Pencil on Paper
Original Size: 35” x 48”
Poster Size: 24″ x 36″
Year: 2020

The animals in the drawing represent at-risk species and those few species that have come back from the brink of extinction due to extensive global conservation efforts.

In 2020 the world was in chaos. Yet, within that chaos, we found our common humanity. We gave to each other in unexpected ways providing food for those in need, comfort to health care workers, and those who lost their families and livelihoods. We found joy through the virtual world of music, art, and dance. The air cleared and we rediscovered the beauty of the natural world and it healed us. We recognized our planet was in trouble and we realized that by saving the fragile ecosystems of the Earth we could save ourselves.

The hands in the drawing spell “World Peace” in American Sign Language. Sign Language is the universal language of the Deaf and gives a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. When we listen to the silent voices of the natural world we learn to heal ourselves. In 2020 we were invited to break through our differences and let the light of “World Peace” shine for all life on Earth.
